The Truth about AHA’s

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Known as AHA’s, fruit acids found in citrus fruits (citric), apples (malic) and papaya (pyruvic). Other acids in the family include lactic acid (from milk), tartaric acid (from red wine), and the most exciting and therefore most widely researched, glycolic acid (from sugar cane).

Lactic acid has been used to soften the skin for centuries and resurfaced in modern cosmetic creams in the 70’s after studies showed that combined with sodium lactate, it improved the skin’s moisture-holding capacity. Tartaric acid, too, has been in used for years: French women used to apply red wine to their faces. Collectively, AHA’s have recently been in the vanguard of the new cosmeceutical movement as they are used to formulate creams which perform beyond the normally superficial cosmetic role.

The dead skin cells build-up which gave icthyosis sufferers their crocodile-skin appearance could be alleviated with a glycolic acid preparation. They showed that the acid molecule dissolved the protein bond which kept a dead skin cell attached. Not only did glycollic acid prove capable of normalizing the desquamation process but could also improve the skin’s own moisture-retaining capabilities.

Dermatologists use AHA’s in concentrations up to 70 percent to perform acid peels and prescribe 5-20 percent AHA creams. The percentage contained in cosmetic creams varies from 1-7 percent. Some over the counter pharmacy brands  contain between 5-15 percent.

Cosmetic AHA preparations can help keep the skin free of dulling and skin-pore clogging dead cells. They can make  the skin slightly brighter and improve its moisture retention. Unlike the physician-prescribed higher concentrations, they cannot produce radical improvement in the ageing complexion. Recent studies suggest that AHA’s may also act as free radical scavengers, sending messages to the dermis to increase  collagen production and increase the skin’s tolerance to retinoids.

Do You Know Your Skin?

Knowing your skin type can help you minimize irritation and cosmetics-related acne. So, before you begin, give yourself the quick skin-type test so you’ll know the right products to use.

Wash you face with a non moisturizer soap like Neutrogena and pat dry. Take a few pieces of rice paper or lens-cleaning tissue paper, and press them on different spots on your face. If your skin is oily, the paper will stick, pick up oily spots, and become translucent. If the paper doesn’t stick and leaves no oily spots, your skin is dry. If it sticks in the T-Zone (forehead, nose, and chin) but not on the cheeks, your skin is combination (or normal). Most women (about 70 percent) have combination or normal skin.

You can expect your skin to change at various points throughout your life, so recheck your skin type periodically and fine-tune your regimen in different climates and at different times of the year. (For example , most women need less moisturizer in the summer, when the oil glands are more active.) However, this does not mean you need to run out and buy separate products for the oily and dry areas of your face, for day and night, or for travel across time zones. Not at all. The beauty of a good skin care regimen lies in its simplicity.

Is your face the roadmap to health?

Your skin is trying to speak, … listen …

Our face is the roadmap to health;  face mapping has been around for centuries, used in traditional Chinese medicine, which observes the appearance/feel of the skin, by determining the well-being of the body, mind, and spirit. Acupuncturists, doctors, homeopathy, nurses, aestheticians, massage therapists, use this practice in better evaluating  patients seeking an alternative  to Western medicine, by naturally healing the body from inside out.

The Forehead – Intestinal imbalance

Breakouts in this area is an indication of colon congestion or purging and cleansing are occurring. If the area is red, it may be an indication of excessive intake of stimulating foods, salt, red meat, or dairy products. If the are appears white, too much sugar consumption, artificial ingredients, drugs, caffeine, or fruit (which contain natural sugars), may be the problem. Moderation is always best.

Lips – Stomach

Cracked and dry lips may be a warning the intestines are not working properly, or our diet is high in preservative content. Lipsticks contain dyes, which compromise mouth and saliva enzymes by inhibiting proper digestion.

Vertical line between the eyes – Liver

Liver malfunctions, disorders and weaknesses may be caused by alcohol, drugs, poor diet, excessive preservatives, don’t ignore this signal, pancreatic cancer is the fourth silent killer in the United States.

Lines on either sides of the brow bone – Spleen

The spleen, know as the filtering organ, once clogged will create stress-related illnesses, and behavioral changes. The lines on either side of the brow bone, may also be linked to tight shoulder area, (again stress related), which may indicate a malfunction of the adrenal glands.

Under eyes darkening – Kidneys

If under eyes begin darkening to brown or black, it may be a sign of kidneys malfunction. If the area also becomes irritated, red, swollen, too many rich foods are part of the diet, alcohol, and/or nicotine, drugs, or other substances may be the cause of the problem.

Nose redness – Male reproductive organs

Redness around the nose, in males, may signal prostate gland malfunction. Similar to the forehead, redness around the nose may also indicate excessive salt, red meat or dairy products consumption; if area surrounding the nose is white, then too much intake of sugar, artificial ingredients, drugs, caffeine or fruit may be the problem.

Tip of the nose redness – Heart

Expanded capillaries, swollen tissue, redness, may indicate heart conditions and high blood pressure.

Cheek area and/or nostrils irritation – Lungs

If the cheek area and/or  irritations in the nostrils consists of blackheads, white heads, the person may have bronchial problems and frequent colds, may also be another sign of poor diet, too much sugar, and dairy products.

Mouth – Stomach

Irritation surrounding the mouth and lips, may indicate poor digestion, and lack of enzyme in the stomach acid.

Chin – Female reproductive organs

Hormonal imbalances in women are manifested on the chin with breakouts, which cause migraines, mood swings, yeast infections, irregular menstruation. Chin breakouts are red and bumpy, cystic like, and painful, depending on the condition. These types of breakouts may continue for months, hormonal therapy may be a solution, however, it may mean a type of weakness in the reproductive organs.

Pure Healing

Fighting germs organically?

Nature offers many antiseptics, we can benefit from them and heal common health problems with a little help . Every household should have tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract handy, they are the most powerful natural disinfectants on earth.

Tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract

Tea tree was discovered in Australia, there are tea trees in other parts of the world, but Australian trees are more concentrated in oils. Tea tree is considered very safe, like anything else, please use caution when using this product, never use full strength oil on infants, children or pets, always dilute it first, if eye contact occurs, rinse throughly with cold water, if accidental ingestion , do not induce vomiting, drink large amounts of water, and, if available, take activated charcoal tablets to absorb the oil within the stomach.

The seeds in grapefruit kill germs on contact, new to the health industry, holistic practitioners are beginning to use it as natural antibiotic and immune system booster, it may be used topically and/or internally. Again, use caution while using products containing grapefruit seed extract, long-term use may disrupt intestinal balance, try limiting intake to 4-6 weeks, please consult with your local holistic physician for optimal results.

  • Are your muscles aching? Do the feel tired? Massage oils containing tea tree soothe and heal the body, and reenergize you, try it next time.
  • Morning breath? Cleanse your mouth with tea tree or grapefruit seed extract, dilute a few drops of oil in 6 ounces of water, then rinse! This works great in treating gingivitis as well.
  • Tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract kill fungi on contact; nail fungus, athlete’s foot and jock itch can be treated with them by soaking affected area in water with either one of the antiseptics, then make sure the skin surface is dried well, wear socks, or clean underwear.
  • Household surfaces, in a spray bottle dilute solution of tea tree oil or grapefruit seed extract, and spray the germs away! Safe to use on doors, telephones, counters, bathrooms, shower curtains, moldy walls, trash cans, humidifier, spray into air ducts and filters, and the air (instead of lysol).
  • Chronic ear infections are the leading cause of antibiotics prescription in children, and myringonotomy (small incision of eardrum where excess fluid is drained, with insertion of tympanostomy tube, to keep the middle ear aerated for a prolonged period of time). Tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract are proven ear infection warriors, by placing a few drops in each ear a few times a day, it will clear infection and heal the eardrum, however if you’re not comfortable diluting and preparing the drops for the child (completely understandable, considering you may be tired and lack time) check out this site, you can buy the drops already made www.imhotepinc.com/product1.html
  • Acne can be helped, simply add a few drops of tea tree oil or grapefruit seed extract to shampoos, conditioners and face wash, for spot treatment apply full strength tea tree oil to blemishes 2 times a day, leave to dry.

Have a great Memorial Day, please remember the ones who fought and are fighting for our liberty, freedom and peace. As always, thank you for reading! Please, pass the blog!

Organic Remedies

Organic is Vibrant well-being

Fruits and vegetables are imperative for our well-being, before antibiotics, our ancestors relied upon Mother Nature for effective and safe remedies. Healthy skin is achieved from within, I would like to share a few recipe treatments using of my favorite  healing foods.

Pineapple

  • Reduces inflammation
  • Speeds up tissue repair
  • Protects bones
  • Energizing
  • Immunity booster

Pineapple is rich in vitamin C, manganese, and bromelain. If your skin is dry, soak it in warm water for 10 minutes, cut a piece of pineapple peel and place it flesh-side down on the area, (miracle worker for dry heels), you may secure it with ace bandages, leave over night. When removing the dressing, gently peel it back, soak the area in warm water for 5 minutes, and dry. You may repeat this up to 3 nights, resulting in amazingly soft skin!

Pumpkin Seeds

  • Promotes prostate health
  • Fights fatigue
  • Aids memory
  • Helps skin complexion

What a great snack! Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc, iron, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and B-complex vitamins. Excellent snack, easy to carry around and super healthy!

Slippery Elm

  • Soothes digestive tract
  • Eases colic
  • Emollient
  • Soothes sore throat
  • Calms irritated skin

Slippery elm is a soothing herb, used internally may help prevent digestive problems, crohn’s disease, and colitis. Used topically, slippery elm soothes wounds, burns, itchy and irritated skin. Cleanse the skin, then apply this soothing magical herb to the area and leave for 5 minutes, repeat as needed.

Milk

  • First-class protein
  • Strengthens bones
  • Rich in calcium

Milk does the body and skin good! Full of calcium, vitamin-B, iron and zinc, some studies have shown it may be good for the brain, nourishes the skin, reduces liver’s production of cholesterol and lowers blood pressure. How about a milk & honey bath lotion? Simply add half a cup of milk, 2 eggs, 3 tbls oil, 2 tsp honey, 2 tsp organic shampoo and 1 tbsp vodka in a bowl, mix together and pour in a glass bottle. You may add 3-4 tablespoons to bath water. (Keep the home-made lotion in the fridge, and use within 3-5 days)

Tea Tree

  • Antifungal
  • Antiseptic
  • Treats skin infections
  • Used for oral infections

Tea tree is an effective remedy for a brad range of ailments, especially fungal and skin problems like acne, insect bites, athlete’s foot, yeast infections, ringworm, sore throats, may help combat gum disease, and useful for colds. Tea tree skin wash is amazing, make your own! 1 tsp dried or 2 tsp fresh tea tree leaves and 1 cup of freshly boiled water. Steep the herbs in water for 10 minutes, then strain. Leave it to cool, then bathe the skin of affected area, repeat as needed.

Fillers

Beauty  ….

What is beauty? Allure, physical attractiveness, good looks, grace, or style? You tell me, enlighten me with your definition of such term. Beauty is perceived differently by all of us, making it easy for us to like different types of people. Every age has its own beauty, we need to embrace and cherish our inner and outer elegance, unfortunately we don’t. We are our own worse critic, we pick, hide, and complain about imperfections, very much unknown to the outside world; in front of the mirror we pull, tuck, and stretch our skin, hoping it will appear tighter, smoother, and perhaps plumper. Society has made coming of aging unacceptable, we look for quick fixes, from facials, peels, and fillers, we are thriving for perfection, which doesn’t exist.

Fillers

Q: Do fillers really remove years?

A: Yes, but the results are temporary.

1. Which are the most common areas fillers are used on?

  • Chin Creases
  • Uneven Brows
  • Dropping corners of the mouth
  • Muscle bands of the neck
  • Crow’s feet (outside eye-corners)
  • Marionette lines
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Lines on the bridge of the nose
  • Deep expression lines

2. Possible side effects?

Always check with your doctor prior any procedure, safety and well-being are more important than beauty.

The crow’s-feet area is a bit pesky, the skin is thinner and the muscle causing the wrinkles is quiet strong, which may cause the treatment to go wrong, by pushing the solution in different parts of the face resulting in deeper wrinkles and a possibility of uneven skin around the injected area.

3. What kind of fillers are available?

There are more than 70 different types of fillers on the market, consult with your doctor by asking questions in ensuring the best choice for you.

The most common fillers are :

  • Botox
  • Juvederm
  • Hylaform
  • Captique
  • Radiesse
  • Restylene
  • Collagen
  • Fat Fascia Dermis (your own fat, which is the best option and less expensive)
  • Liquid Silicone
  • Poly-L-Acid known as Sculptra (currently only available for HIV – patients)

Beauty is beauty, but if a treatment or two makes a person feel better about themselves, I say go for it, why not? Keep it in moderation, be healthy and happy!

Choices …

Racing for Youth

Is a youthful appearance worth time, money and effort? Many people ask themselves this question, first let’s thank the media, movie stars, and entertainment industry for the answer, which is a big fat “YES”. I would love to argue, and validate “our natural perfection”, unfortunately I am unable to do so. Considering I reside in Southern California, the land of the beauty, where stars are abundant and top plastic surgeons right beside them?

With many different options available, how does anyone know where, how much, or which treatment to pick? The choice is essentially yours, however a great dermatologist will guide you to a better and natural you, without gouging your bank account.

How to choose a doctor or surgeon?

As the quest for eternal youth begins, look around! From my professional opinion, anything cosmetic is aesthetically pleasing, natural, and subtle. Recommendations from another doctor or a close friend, are the best when selecting a doctor or surgeon; don’t settle with one, but gather a few numbers, make a few appointments, and find someone who you can relate to and feel comfortable with.

Don’t be shy! Ask if they have a patient portfolio you can look at! Before and after pictures are priceless in choosing the right doctor for you, flip through the pages, ask questions, i.e. success rates in procedure or complications due to surgery, and recovery time (may vary depending on age, health, or other conditions).

Is your doctor Board Certified? Ask him/her, knowing the field your doctor is certified in is imperative to the results you want; also, do your own research! You may find information regarding your doctor online Doctorfinder

Are you racing for youth? If so, please be safe, choose carefully, don’t forget to ask questions and be comfortable doing it!
