Chemical Peel or Microdermabrasion

Educated choices

With many skin care treatments available, choosing the right one can be difficult. The most popular non-surgical treatment in skin rejuvenation are Chemical Peels and Microdermabrasion. Both may be very effective, leaving the patient with a smoother and even tone complexion.

Chemical Peels

Peels are performed by a doctor or under his/her supervision, anesthetics may be required, depending on the chemical peel strength. Pre-treating the skin with hydroquinone products, retinoids and SPF-30 prior the appointment, may decrease post-treatment inflammation, and cold-sore breakouts, some patients may be prone to them.

Chemical Peels Agents

  • Glycolic Acid
  • Salicylic Acid
  • Trichloroacetic Acid
  • Lactic Acid

3 types of peels

  • Superficial – No down time, the surface of skin layers are removed, improving roughness, some discoloration and fine lines.
  • Medium – Skin may be irritated for a few days, this is a deeper peel, removes the centermost skin layers, aiding in rejuvenation, fewer lines and wrinkles appearance, and a more even pigmented skin tone.
  • Deep – A week to 10 days recovery, beneficial for acne scars, deep-set wrinkles, and skin discoloration. Most doctors will opt for laser treatment instead of this percentage peel, to avoid discomfort.

Always consult with your doctor first, a series of treatments may be required for optimal results, please  follow after care instructions to avoid possible infection or scarring.

Microdermabrasion

This treatment doesn’t need to be performed by the doctor, nor requires anesthetics. Your trusted aesthetician will perform this service, and should take about 20 minutes. However, it may cause your skin some discomfort and redness, lasting a short time. People with couperose skin (broken capillaries) should consult a doctor before choosing this treatment.

Microdermabrasion uses a suction wand with a stream of crystals or a diamond, which carefully exfoliates the skin; as the skin heals, you may see improvements in fine lines and enlarged pores. A series of treatments may be beneficial in achieving lasting results.

Which ever treatment you may choose, please ask questions, consult your doctor or professional, and follow home-care instructions. Please feel free to share your opinion and experience with us!
