The Key to Youthful Skincare

Products, products, and more products ….

Have you found your niche product? What are the must have products of your choice? Did you know that choosing the wrong items can emphasize the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, and crows feet around the eye area? Instead of “experimenting” at the expense of your beautiful complexion, why not learn what Skin Type you are  before selecting a skin care line.

Today, I’d like to introduce your path to a youthful, beautiful, and supple complexion via Murad!

Know Your Skin Type

OILY – Shiny skin, enlarged pores, prone to blackheads and blemishes, some tightness.

COMBINATION/ NORMAL – Medium pores, smooth and even texture, good circulation, healthy color, may tend toward dryness on the cheeks, may be oily in T-Zone.

SENSITIVE – Thin delicate, fine pores. Flushes easily, prone to broken capillaries, frequently allergic, can be rashy.

DRY – Feels tight, especially after cleansing; fine wrinkles, flaking, red patches. In woman of color, appears ashy or dull from dead skin buildup.

AGING OR SUN-DAMAGED – Feels tight, visible wrinkles, slack skin tone especially around cheeks and jawline, leathery texture, broken capillaries.

The Truth about AHA’s

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Known as AHA’s, fruit acids found in citrus fruits (citric), apples (malic) and papaya (pyruvic). Other acids in the family include lactic acid (from milk), tartaric acid (from red wine), and the most exciting and therefore most widely researched, glycolic acid (from sugar cane).

Lactic acid has been used to soften the skin for centuries and resurfaced in modern cosmetic creams in the 70’s after studies showed that combined with sodium lactate, it improved the skin’s moisture-holding capacity. Tartaric acid, too, has been in used for years: French women used to apply red wine to their faces. Collectively, AHA’s have recently been in the vanguard of the new cosmeceutical movement as they are used to formulate creams which perform beyond the normally superficial cosmetic role.

The dead skin cells build-up which gave icthyosis sufferers their crocodile-skin appearance could be alleviated with a glycolic acid preparation. They showed that the acid molecule dissolved the protein bond which kept a dead skin cell attached. Not only did glycollic acid prove capable of normalizing the desquamation process but could also improve the skin’s own moisture-retaining capabilities.

Dermatologists use AHA’s in concentrations up to 70 percent to perform acid peels and prescribe 5-20 percent AHA creams. The percentage contained in cosmetic creams varies from 1-7 percent. Some over the counter pharmacy brands  contain between 5-15 percent.

Cosmetic AHA preparations can help keep the skin free of dulling and skin-pore clogging dead cells. They can make  the skin slightly brighter and improve its moisture retention. Unlike the physician-prescribed higher concentrations, they cannot produce radical improvement in the ageing complexion. Recent studies suggest that AHA’s may also act as free radical scavengers, sending messages to the dermis to increase  collagen production and increase the skin’s tolerance to retinoids.

The Secret Moisturizer?

Winter, this is one is for you ! 🙂

A good friend asked  “who makes an efficient and affordable moisturizer?“… hmmm … thinking of  great and efficient products including moisturizers, $$$ signs come to mind. It is what it is; however, let me share a few tips, hoping to make a difference in your product selection and purchase.

A few questions came to me, such as:

Do we have to pay high dollars for hydrated skin? Well, it’s a personal choice depending on your budget.

Is the skin care industry saturated with big promises and little results? It sure is!

How can you be sure you won’t develop a reaction to a product? You’ll find the answer below 🙂

I don’t feel it’s fair for companies to advertise, push costly and ineffective products, by bombarding us with cheesy pink and neon green ads, claiming to erase wrinkles in 3-weeks, or your money back is absurd! Who has the time to buy products, use them, and if not liked, package them up, go to the post office and return them? Did you know it takes 3-4 weeks for cells to regenerate, making it difficult for an individual to see/feel any difference? My conclusion, (or opinion), 30 days money back guarantees are essentially worthless.

Please understand any products mentioned in this blog, are items I personally use and believe in. Now, let’s get back to moisturizing, what makes one brand more effective than another? Together, let’s answer a few essential questions.

Q: Do you know your skin?

A: If your skin feels dry and tight around your eyes and cheeks, you need to moisturize. If the answer is no, perhaps you can avoid this item, why over moisturize when the skin’s ph is normal or oily? Over-moisturizing is bad for your skin, leaving you with a shiny, greasy look (not the pretty one either).

Q: What’s the difference between a good moisturizer and a bad one?

A: Depending on your skin type, you may need more humectant ingredients, (which elevates the hydration of the skin to minimize the dehydrating effect of some active ingredients like corticoids), or emollients in your moisturizer, ( substances that soften and soothe the skin. They are used to correct dryness and scaling of the skin. They are a key component in the manufacture of lipstick, lotions, and other cosmetic products).

Often used humectants ingredients include the following: sodium hyaluronate; glycerin; sorbitol; butylene glycol; sodium PCA; etc.

There are many emollients agents, for example: sunflower oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil; plant oils; mineral oils; shea, cocoa butter; lanolin; fats such as caprylic triglycerides; silicone and similar ingredients, help guard moisture and protects the skin.

Q: What about fragrance and preservatives?

A: Well, both of these agents may cause skin irritation, breakouts, rashes and so on. Fragrance is not hard to avoid; however, preservatives are, so my advice is to find a fragrant free product that works for your skin type and budget.

Over moisturizing has negative effects on the skin, clogging  pores with unnecessary products will leave your complexion looking dull and prone to breakouts. Always consult a physician if blemishes persist, or change shape, use your best judgement.

Below are a few products I love, check out my slideshow: Guinot, Biodroga, Babor, Nivea, Neutrogena, Oil of Olay, and Burt’s Bee.

Wind, snow, and rain are elements which contribute to chapped skin and lips. How can one avoid the constant peeling, burning, and redness look? Simple,  moisturize!

Keep your body hydrated, use chap-stick, and use a good moisturizer. Personally speaking, my poor lips feel the effects from our crazy weather year around, not fun!
