The 3 Truths About Peels

Actual testimonials of REAL people who preformed DIY peels. Please be sure to receive services from a skin care professional!

1. Used my glycolic peel last night and got distracted… my face is covered with weeping sores, I look like I’ve been scraped along the road… I’m really upset. Please help! I used 50% glycolic acid. I usually do it for 2-3 mins which results in a bit of flaking for 3-4 days. I was doing my hair at the same time and got distracted, so it was on for 5 mins and the only thing which doesn’t hurt is sudocreme. If anyone has any suggestions or has had a serious peel in a salon and knows what to expect I would be really grateful.  ~ Liz

2. I gave myself a GA peel and seemed fine (30% GA, 2.1 PH and 6-8 minutes). then this past monday I did another after about 3 weeks after my last … Anyways it burned the sides of my chin and scabbed over, a lot worst than I ever had and I look horrible!!! The scabs hurt, itch, and I must visit a dermatologist for help. Anything I can do to improve this???! Will this leave red marks?  My entire face and neck are discolored! Help! ~ Lori

3. I JUST USED A 60% GLYCOL/LACTIC acid peel from skin laboratory and I got a burnt on the upper part of my lip and my chin!!! I accidentally scrubbed too hard with my cotton pad when I was using water after leaving it for more than 10 mins on!! S**T What should I do? I can literally see the NEXT layer of skin beneath… OMG! ~ Anonymous

How many people worry about aging? How many people say “Oh, another birthday, let’s not mention it, at my age I would rather lose count ….” ? Is this what Hollywood has done to mankind? Perhaps magazines? Don’t waste another year, celebrate, you’re BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

Don’t you know beauty doesn’t age? Did you know beauty comes from within? When we’re happy, we glow and attract people who are positive and see our inner beauty, which magnifies our outer beauty as well, causing it to stand out while brightening the world we live in! Smile all the time, even when a birthday is approaching, have fun and cherish every moment, your skin will appreciate it too!

Little Secrets about Beauty

POSITIVITY

Positive and optimistic attitude is important and associated with youth, why you ask? According to statistics, it shows younger people have not experienced real life challenges, therefore they may appear happier and more upbeat, making them look younger than what they are … I disagree, there have been many instances where an individual faced a life threatening obstacle, illness, or some type of traumatic experience, but that very same individual chose to feel the pain and release it, leaving room for personal and spiritual growth, equating to a positive outlook in life, and eventually moving on. So, why not begin today, and try to do out best in loving ourselves, our age, our soul, and by doing so, let’s smile, the more you smile, the younger you look!

SLEEP

Dark circles, bags, or both? Don’t rush to a plastic surgeon yet, begin by changing your sleeping patterns. You may see a dramatic change from how you feel, to your complexion. Did you know lack of sleep dehydrates the skin? Causing breakouts, uneven color pigmentation, or/and dark patches in the eye area? Begin today! Promise yourself this now, you’ll do the very best in setting an earlier bedtime, by leaving your laptop on the desk, turn your phone off and don’t watch t.v, meditate, and drift your thoughts and mind toward a deep, sound sleep. Like everything, this too is a learned behavior, you may call it a learning process. Begin today, your goals towards wellness and a more beautiful you!

EXERCISE

Did you know another secret to vibrant looking skin is exercise? Yes, you heard right, exercise helps you feel better about yourself, but it also helps your skin release any toxins via sweat glands. Don’t forget epidermal elasticity, by exercising regularly your body releases natural hormones making your face, neck, and all over appearance look and feel firmer. Give it a try! Exercise your way to beauty!

DRESS TO IMPRESS

Look in your closet, what do you see? Do you like your wardrobe? Or is it time for an update? How do you look and feel? Keep up with changing times and trends! It feels good to look good! Meaning, wearing clothes that fit you, not too loose nor too tight! You deserve to feel and look your best in a casual setting, work environment, or special event, dress to impress yourself! When a person feels good, he or she may smile more, igniting and projecting their inner beauty to the outside world. Life is beautiful, not only due to nature, or things in it, but also because of people who actively make themselves part of it. Live a beautiful life, don’t settle for just “being” there, …. you are meant to SHINE!!!!

These are a few of the many secrets to eternal beauty. Beauty comes from within, make your uniqueness stand out! Your are BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

Organic Remedies

Organic is Vibrant well-being

Fruits and vegetables are imperative for our well-being, before antibiotics, our ancestors relied upon Mother Nature for effective and safe remedies. Healthy skin is achieved from within, I would like to share a few recipe treatments using of my favorite  healing foods.

Pineapple

  • Reduces inflammation
  • Speeds up tissue repair
  • Protects bones
  • Energizing
  • Immunity booster

Pineapple is rich in vitamin C, manganese, and bromelain. If your skin is dry, soak it in warm water for 10 minutes, cut a piece of pineapple peel and place it flesh-side down on the area, (miracle worker for dry heels), you may secure it with ace bandages, leave over night. When removing the dressing, gently peel it back, soak the area in warm water for 5 minutes, and dry. You may repeat this up to 3 nights, resulting in amazingly soft skin!

Pumpkin Seeds

  • Promotes prostate health
  • Fights fatigue
  • Aids memory
  • Helps skin complexion

What a great snack! Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc, iron, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and B-complex vitamins. Excellent snack, easy to carry around and super healthy!

Slippery Elm

  • Soothes digestive tract
  • Eases colic
  • Emollient
  • Soothes sore throat
  • Calms irritated skin

Slippery elm is a soothing herb, used internally may help prevent digestive problems, crohn’s disease, and colitis. Used topically, slippery elm soothes wounds, burns, itchy and irritated skin. Cleanse the skin, then apply this soothing magical herb to the area and leave for 5 minutes, repeat as needed.

Milk

  • First-class protein
  • Strengthens bones
  • Rich in calcium

Milk does the body and skin good! Full of calcium, vitamin-B, iron and zinc, some studies have shown it may be good for the brain, nourishes the skin, reduces liver’s production of cholesterol and lowers blood pressure. How about a milk & honey bath lotion? Simply add half a cup of milk, 2 eggs, 3 tbls oil, 2 tsp honey, 2 tsp organic shampoo and 1 tbsp vodka in a bowl, mix together and pour in a glass bottle. You may add 3-4 tablespoons to bath water. (Keep the home-made lotion in the fridge, and use within 3-5 days)

Tea Tree

  • Antifungal
  • Antiseptic
  • Treats skin infections
  • Used for oral infections

Tea tree is an effective remedy for a brad range of ailments, especially fungal and skin problems like acne, insect bites, athlete’s foot, yeast infections, ringworm, sore throats, may help combat gum disease, and useful for colds. Tea tree skin wash is amazing, make your own! 1 tsp dried or 2 tsp fresh tea tree leaves and 1 cup of freshly boiled water. Steep the herbs in water for 10 minutes, then strain. Leave it to cool, then bathe the skin of affected area, repeat as needed.

The Secret of Skin Nourishment

My mother is by far one of the most beautiful, healthy, and intelligent woman I have ever met, she looks amazing, she’s funny and witty, with a sharp mind. I know, some of you may think “Of course you think that, she’s your mother …. ” , but that’s not the case.  Yes, I love her dearly, looking at her from a stranger perspective she has beautiful skin, a head of healthy and full hair, and a stunning shapely body.

What I’ve learned through the years is “Our body is an amazing machine, and it is our duty to keep it healthy”.

Still with me here? …. Good! What is the secret to amazing, supple, and radiant skin? Good nutrients of course! Small changes to our diet make a world of difference, and it’s never too late to start 🙂

Good nutrients are proteins, vitamins, essential fatty acids, and minerals. My mom loves raw almonds, they are high in mono-unsaturated fats, vitamin E and one of the best sources of vegetable protein; eating a handful of raw almonds every few hours will help stabilize blood sugars and boost your energy.

Making your own trail mix is fun and a healthy snack

  • 1 cup  raw almonds
  • 1 cup pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 cup raisins (I prefer golden raisins)
  • 1/2 cup dried cherries and pomegranate seed (or cranberries)

You can find all of  the ingredients at your local health food store, we prefer Whole Foods.

Refined sugars have negative effects to our health, they inhibit white blood cells efficiency, (which help fight bacteria and infections), avoiding these sugars from our daily diet are imperative to our overall well-being, e.g., will help boost your natural energy, decrease blood fats, including the slowing down of the skin aging process.

I would like to thank my mom for sharing this valuable secret to a more beautiful and radiant skin, which now I’m sharing with you!  🙂

The Secret Moisturizer?

Winter, this is one is for you ! 🙂

A good friend asked  “who makes an efficient and affordable moisturizer?“… hmmm … thinking of  great and efficient products including moisturizers, $$$ signs come to mind. It is what it is; however, let me share a few tips, hoping to make a difference in your product selection and purchase.

A few questions came to me, such as:

Do we have to pay high dollars for hydrated skin? Well, it’s a personal choice depending on your budget.

Is the skin care industry saturated with big promises and little results? It sure is!

How can you be sure you won’t develop a reaction to a product? You’ll find the answer below 🙂

I don’t feel it’s fair for companies to advertise, push costly and ineffective products, by bombarding us with cheesy pink and neon green ads, claiming to erase wrinkles in 3-weeks, or your money back is absurd! Who has the time to buy products, use them, and if not liked, package them up, go to the post office and return them? Did you know it takes 3-4 weeks for cells to regenerate, making it difficult for an individual to see/feel any difference? My conclusion, (or opinion), 30 days money back guarantees are essentially worthless.

Please understand any products mentioned in this blog, are items I personally use and believe in. Now, let’s get back to moisturizing, what makes one brand more effective than another? Together, let’s answer a few essential questions.

Q: Do you know your skin?

A: If your skin feels dry and tight around your eyes and cheeks, you need to moisturize. If the answer is no, perhaps you can avoid this item, why over moisturize when the skin’s ph is normal or oily? Over-moisturizing is bad for your skin, leaving you with a shiny, greasy look (not the pretty one either).

Q: What’s the difference between a good moisturizer and a bad one?

A: Depending on your skin type, you may need more humectant ingredients, (which elevates the hydration of the skin to minimize the dehydrating effect of some active ingredients like corticoids), or emollients in your moisturizer, ( substances that soften and soothe the skin. They are used to correct dryness and scaling of the skin. They are a key component in the manufacture of lipstick, lotions, and other cosmetic products).

Often used humectants ingredients include the following: sodium hyaluronate; glycerin; sorbitol; butylene glycol; sodium PCA; etc.

There are many emollients agents, for example: sunflower oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil; plant oils; mineral oils; shea, cocoa butter; lanolin; fats such as caprylic triglycerides; silicone and similar ingredients, help guard moisture and protects the skin.

Q: What about fragrance and preservatives?

A: Well, both of these agents may cause skin irritation, breakouts, rashes and so on. Fragrance is not hard to avoid; however, preservatives are, so my advice is to find a fragrant free product that works for your skin type and budget.

Over moisturizing has negative effects on the skin, clogging  pores with unnecessary products will leave your complexion looking dull and prone to breakouts. Always consult a physician if blemishes persist, or change shape, use your best judgement.

Below are a few products I love, check out my slideshow: Guinot, Biodroga, Babor, Nivea, Neutrogena, Oil of Olay, and Burt’s Bee.

Enjoy!

Fillers

Beauty  ….

What is beauty? Allure, physical attractiveness, good looks, grace, or style? You tell me, enlighten me with your definition of such term. Beauty is perceived differently by all of us, making it easy for us to like different types of people. Every age has its own beauty, we need to embrace and cherish our inner and outer elegance, unfortunately we don’t. We are our own worse critic, we pick, hide, and complain about imperfections, very much unknown to the outside world; in front of the mirror we pull, tuck, and stretch our skin, hoping it will appear tighter, smoother, and perhaps plumper. Society has made coming of aging unacceptable, we look for quick fixes, from facials, peels, and fillers, we are thriving for perfection, which doesn’t exist.

Fillers

Q: Do fillers really remove years?

A: Yes, but the results are temporary.

1. Which are the most common areas fillers are used on?

  • Chin Creases
  • Uneven Brows
  • Dropping corners of the mouth
  • Muscle bands of the neck
  • Crow’s feet (outside eye-corners)
  • Marionette lines
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Lines on the bridge of the nose
  • Deep expression lines

2. Possible side effects?

Always check with your doctor prior any procedure, safety and well-being are more important than beauty.

The crow’s-feet area is a bit pesky, the skin is thinner and the muscle causing the wrinkles is quiet strong, which may cause the treatment to go wrong, by pushing the solution in different parts of the face resulting in deeper wrinkles and a possibility of uneven skin around the injected area.

3. What kind of fillers are available?

There are more than 70 different types of fillers on the market, consult with your doctor by asking questions in ensuring the best choice for you.

The most common fillers are :

  • Botox
  • Juvederm
  • Hylaform
  • Captique
  • Radiesse
  • Restylene
  • Collagen
  • Fat Fascia Dermis (your own fat, which is the best option and less expensive)
  • Liquid Silicone
  • Poly-L-Acid known as Sculptra (currently only available for HIV – patients)

Beauty is beauty, but if a treatment or two makes a person feel better about themselves, I say go for it, why not? Keep it in moderation, be healthy and happy!

Intense Pulsed Light Treatment (IPL)

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is a non-invasive procedure that uses pulse of visible light to improve the appearance of the aging skin. It is most often performed on the face, neck, chest, and hands to erase the signs of aging.

Among these signs of aging are fine lines, red blemishes, mottled coloration, broken blood vessels, pigment discoloration such as freckles and age spots, enlarged pores, coarse or rough skin, loss of skin tone and elasticity, and general sun damage. A series of Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments bring a more youthful, smooth and revitalized skin appearance, with no downtime.

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is clinically shown to reduce wrinkles and improve the tone of the skin by non-invasively stimulating new collagen production.

The type of response heard from patients after having Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is that they feel like their skin is lifted. There is a decrease in pore size, their skin feels tighter, and there is a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.
